Slavery may have been abolished in 1833, in part thanks to Hull’s very own William Wilberforce, but it still remains a very real problem to this day.
Right now, in the UK, thousands, if not tens of thousands of people from all over the world are victims of human trafficking and modern slavery – subjected to abuse, forced labour and exploitation for the benefit of criminals.
At Prestige Recruitment, we believe it is our responsibility, and the responsibility of the recruitment industry as a whole to do everything in our power to tackle modern slavery. It’s a big part of our business and we’re constantly investing in staff training and systems designed to minimise the risk of our candidates becoming victims.
This month, as part of this ongoing process, our Hull team is heading to Tackling Modern Slavery in UK Businesses on 24th October. This is a full day workshop in Hull run by Stronger Together – the dedicated multi-stakeholder business initiative focused on tackling modern slavery across the supply chain.
As part of the interactive training day, our teams will be covering a wide range of different subjects, including:
We will also be taking a closer look at some of the industries where people are most at risk of becoming victims of modern slavery, including the food, manufacturing, agriculture and car wash businesses.
The full day workshop will be held at the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation at the University of Hull – a fitting setting for such an important subject.

At Prestige, protecting candidates is at the very heart of our business. We’re conscious that many of the industries we work in are those where employees may be at higher risk of becoming victims – and do everything in our power to prevent this from happening from the moment they come through our doors and throughout their job.
In addition to ongoing investment in staff training throughout the organisation, we have put robust systems in place that are specifically designed to minimise the potential risk. Vetting candidates looking for their next job and businesses looking to employ new staff, understanding how to spot the warning signs and ensuring that every business we work with is committed to working ethically, we aim to make it as difficult as possible for criminals to target people.
We also work closely with organisations across the UK, including:
Further information about our approach and systems can be found on ourModern Day Slavery Statement.
At Prestige, we’re 100% committed to our candidates – ensuring that they only work in safe, positive and fair working environments, free from exploitation and trafficking.
We raise awareness and provide support to candidates from the moment they first walk into our offices, and throughout the process - during registration, inductions and by displaying notices across all offices and onsite facilities around the country.
