In this blog, we’ll take a look at how you can start your career in manufacturing and the skills you’ll need.

Requirements for working in the manufacturing industry

As the job variety in manufacturing varies due to there being so many different roles available in the industry, there isn’t one set of requirements. There are several roles available that don’t require any specific qualifications and are trained purely through on the job training. This includes picking and packing roles, production operatives and other general labour jobs.

Some roles may require certain qualifications, especially those which include the operation of heavy machinery or managerial positions. This is because certain safety standards have to be met, which can require some safety training and qualifications relating to the operation of potentially harmful machinery. Managerial positions often require good language skills and previous experience in leadership.

What employers look for in an industrial worker

  • Ability to learn - as there is such a wide variety of roles within manufacturing, your employer will want to see that you’re able to quickly pick up new skills quickly. This means you’ll be able to work in whatever role needs filling.
  • Good with responsibility - as there’s a potential you’ll be working with valuable goods or dangerous machinery, it’s important that you’re able to take on responsibility, especially if you’re looking for a supervisory and managerial role.
  • Efficiency - as with a lot of manufacturing, the speed at which a product is produced is crucial. However, it must be within quality standards. This means a balance between being quick, but also producing to the required standard is a crucial skill to have.
