Ban The Box

Ban The Box

"Ban the Box" refers to a campaign aimed at removing the checkbox on job application forms that asks whether applicants have a criminal record. The movement advocates for fair employment opportunities for individuals with criminal histories by delaying inquiries into an applicant's criminal history until later in the hiring process, often after the initial stages of consideration.

The intention is to prevent discrimination against those with past convictions and to give them a fair chance to compete for employment based on their qualifications rather than their criminal history. The movement has gained traction in various jurisdictions, with many states and municipalities implementing "Ban the Box" laws or regulations.

Gangmaster and Labour Abuse Authority

Gangmaster and Labour Abuse Authority

GLA are a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) governed by an independent Board made up of a chair and six members, who were recruited for their respective knowledge, experience and skills.

Their role is to protect vulnerable and exploited workers. Through the intelligence we receive from our inspections, the public, industry and other government departments, we investigate reports of worker exploitation and illegal activity such as human trafficking, forced labour and illegal labour provision, as well as offences under the National Minimum Wage and Employment Agencies Acts.

Labour providers are assessed to check they meet the GLAA licensing standards which cover health and safety, accommodation, pay, transport and training. They ensure that they are fit to hold a licence and that tax, National Insurance and VAT regulations are met.
